Professional 1 (Level 9):
This class meets: Monday-Thursday from 9:00am-1:30pm or Monday-Tuesday from 9:00am-6:30pm
8 week session.
The course emphasizes essay development and reading comprehension in the context of contemporary, high-interest content, such as emerging knowledge of the human brain, cross-cultural influence, and corporate ethics and sustainability. Students will learn to use previewing, skimming, scanning, and note-taking techniques; accurately summarize and paraphrase main ideas from level-appropriate appropriate readings, and enhance listening skills with respect to more nuanced features of the language, such as: speaker’s attitude, language that signals a revision of previously held beliefs, and subtle ways of asking for advice. Besides the academic writing components, students will also learn the essential components of a clear narrative. Critical thinking skills will be explored and employed in order to analyze the reading, conduct research, and compose increasingly complex essays. The student will also learn different phrasal verbs commonly used in the English language and how to use them in appropriate contexts in their daily lives.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 1-8 or receive a passing score on the IEP Level 8 test
